| Winchester Volunteer Centre helps local company put something back into the community. |
 |
| When Sharon Ellis from Denplan asked Sue Heath-Caldwell of Winchester Volunteer Centre to help her source some team challenges for Denplan staff to complete in a day, she was amazed at the number of challenges on offer. Sharon had told Sue that they wanted to give something back to the local community and do something to support others less fortunate than themselves. Find out more about Denplan’s challenge day, and how your organisation can get involved in its local community and contribute to our Community Strategy. |

| Launch pad for business success |
 |
| The new Winchester Business Centre was launched on Tuesday 2nd October, in the first of a series of events at the Parchment Street base. The centre will provide a helping hand for businesses across the Winchester District, from budding entrepreneurs to long-established companies. Visitors can access advice, support and guidance in an enterprise-focussed environment and benefit from meeting space, specialist 'surgeries' and training days all under one roof. | Working together to keep Winchester District safe this Halloween period |
 |
| Police, including Police Community Support Officers and Specials, Fire crews, Neighbourhood Wardens, Accredited Community Support Officers and members of the City Council were deployed to selected target locations across the District this Halloween. They patrolled in mixed groups, educating children and young people in matters of safety and respect and handing out bracelets produced for the event. These glow-in-the-dark bracelets embossed with the logo ‘Give Respect - Get Respect’ and ‘Fireworks – Be Safe’, were distributed to children on the night to encourage them to show respect (particularly towards older people). A range of various initiatives were implemented prior to and in the lead up to the event, including posters being displayed in shops indicating that no flour or eggs will be sold to under 18s in the run up to Halloween. Find out what else the Community Safety Partnership is up to on their website. |

| Community Planning flourishing in Winchester |
 |
Following a recent push to encourage more of our communities to undertake parish plans, neighbourhood plans or market town health checks, numbers in Winchester District are starting to grow. Four communities have completed a parish or town plan, two of which are about to begin the process again, with a further 9 now underway and making good progress. Click here for details of which communities are involved.
As this work progresses there is a great opportunity for partner agencies to learn about the needs and wishes of communities, which can help inform policies and service planning. To help ensure that the emerging plans are realistic we will be asking colleagues to provide advice and guidance to community planning groups on the options available to them. Then when new plans are published it will be important that, where we have a part to play, we all do our utmost to incorporate their aspirations in our work programmes.
In Winchester District this co-ordination will be overseen by Steve Lincoln, Community Planning Manager at Winchester City Council. For more information or to discuss how your organisation might help or benefit, please contact Steve on 01962 848110 or by e-mail slincoln@winchester.gov.uk. |

| Bad news or Good news for Winchester City and Climate Change? |
 |
Although the city of Winchester was recently ranked by the World Wildlife Fund as having the biggest ecological footprint in the UK, this bad news also provides an excellent opportunity to highlight this important issue and what the WDSP is doing to help the district’s residents and businesses become more ‘green’.
Winchester Action on Climate Change (WACC) is a brand new community-led group which will be taking the lead for the LSP on climate change. To find out more about this group and what their aims are, please contact Robert Hutchison.
The Winchester District Climate Change Action Plan consultation has now finished and we are now looking for commitments and actions from everyone to help deliver it. The plan will be adopted by the City Council in December and we will then be looking for other partners to help us deliver it. See the City Council website for more information, or contact Teresa Kennard. |

| Who runs this place? |
 |
| The vision of a Youth Council for the Winchester district is set to become a reality after a hugely successful youth democracy event took place on the 8th October. More than 80 young people from Westgate, Swanmore, Perins and King's secondary schools tried their hand at 'political speed dating' among other things in the day of activities organised by Winchester City Council, working in partnership with Hampshire County Council Children's Services (Youth Service) and students from King's School. |

| Giving early evening activities a boost |
 |
| Winchester City Council is developing a framework to boost the evening economy of the city centre. There is a recognised lull in activity between 6pm and 9pm, after workers leave for home and before others arrive to enjoy an evening out. Filling that gap will not only boost the economy of the city centre, but will give it a new lease of life. Have your say on what could be done to boost the evening economy and fill in the online questionnaire. |

| Update on Winchester High Street improvements |
 |
The City Council and County Council have joined forces to progress the maintenance and improvement of Winchester High Street. The two councils will now work together to prepare proposals for the improvement of the High Street between Jewry Street and the Broadway, with major work programmed for 2009/2010. A website will be set up in Spring to keep people up to date with the plans.
Interim repairs will also be initiated to the High Street and surrounding roads ensuring the safety of the public, and improvements will be designed to take account of construction work for the redevelopment of Silver Hill. |
